Lai Yue Angeline Chan

Dr Lai Yue Angeline Chan completed her PhD in 2012 at the University of Queensland in the field of biochemistry. She has been a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Molecular Bioscience since then and has extensive experience in peptide/analytical chemistry, proteomics, peptide structure analysis using nuclear magnetic resonance and circular dichroism techniques, and a range of in vitro/in vivo assay development. She is a recipient of Queensland Women Academic Fund and International Young Scientist Program Fellowship (IUBMB). She leads a small team of PhD student and staffs in peptide drug design and development. Her main research interest is to discover nature-inspired peptides and develop them into drugs for targeting human diseases. Most of her work involved peptides from plants (e.g., gourd family, sunflowers, and violets), wasps, spiders and bacteria. These studies have made large contributions to the understanding of sequence diversity of a range of disulfide-rich peptides, structure-activity relationships, and for reengineering process. Overall, her research highlights the potential of these peptide therapeutics for the treatment of cancer, obesity, chronic wound, heart and infectious diseases.
