During his undergraduate/graduate studies he demonstrated the activity of the cytoplasmic peptide:N-glycanase (PNGase/Ngly1), a de-N-glycosylating enzyme in mammalian cells. He then became a Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Assistant Professor at Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology, State University of New York at Stony Brook (1997-2001). In December 2001 he returned to Japan to start an independent career as a Researcher, Precursory Research for Embryonic Science and Technology (PRESTO), Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)(2001-2005). In February 2002 he became an Assistant Professor, University of Tokyo, and in January 2004 he moved to Osaka to serve as a Visiting Associate Professor, Osaka University Graduate School of Medicine. In October 2007, he became Team Leader, Glycometabolome Team, Systems Glycobiology Research Group, RIKEN. Since April 2018 he holds his current position as Chief Scientist, Glycometabolic Biochemistry Laboratory, RIKEN Cluster for Pioneering Research (CPR). He received Genzyme Award (1997)/Glycobiology Significant Achievement Award (2006) from Society for Glycobiology, and Young Investigator Award from the Japanese Biochemical Society (2005) and the Japanese Society for Carbohydrate Research (2008).
